Comet 67P Sediment Transport Map
Co-registered images and change maps showing where material moved on comet 67P.
In plain words
This dataset is not about Titan. It tracks surface changes on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, such as boulders, scarps and plains that changed position, by lining up images taken at different times. It holds basemap images, analysis layers, the files that record how each image was lined up, shapefiles marking each change and ArcMap projects for each region.
Good for: compare surface change on a comet.
Open it in your GIS
ArcGIS Pro
Opens directly Opens as it is downloaded.
- Download comet_67p_barrington.zip (520 MB) from the Hayes Research Group data products page.
- Extract the zip and keep every folder together in one place.
- Open ArcGIS Pro and create a new project.
- On the Insert tab, in the Project group, click Import Map.
- Select a region project in Arc_Map_Projects, such as Arc_Hapi.mxd, and click OK.
- On the Project tab, click Save As and save the project under your own name.
- Turn layers on and off in the Contents pane to compare dates.
- The projects are ArcMap documents (.mxd). ArcGIS Pro opens them through Import Map.
- The images are lined up with each other in an unknown coordinate system, not in comet latitude and longitude.
- The .pgwx and .aux.xml files were written by ArcGIS and hold the image alignment. Keep them next to their PNG files.
- No license is stated for this dataset. Cite Barrington et al. (2023) and ask the authors before you republish it.
QGIS
After a conversion Needs one conversion step first. The steps say how.
- Download comet_67p_barrington.zip and extract it into one folder.
- Copy each .pgwx file you need and rename the copy to end in .pgw.
- Select Layer > Add Layer > Add Raster Layer.
- Select the matching PNG file and click Add.
- Leave the layer with no CRS when QGIS asks.
- Select Layer > Add Layer > Add Vector Layer and add the shapefiles for the same region.
- GDAL, and so QGIS, ignores .pgwx files. After renaming to .pgw, GDAL places the image in the shared image space (tested with GDAL 3.12.2).
- The alignment has no coordinate system, and the shapefiles have no .prj. Do not assign an Earth CRS.
- QGIS cannot open the ArcMap .mxd projects. Load each layer by hand.
- No license is stated for this dataset.
JMARS
Not confirmed Nobody has confirmed this tool opens it yet.
- Check whether your JMARS version lists comet 67P in the body list.
- Use the PNG images only as reference pictures if 67P is not listed.
- JMARS support for comet 67P is not confirmed. We found no JMARS page that lists it.
- The images have no latitude and longitude, so a JMARS custom map cannot be placed correctly from these files.
Check the coordinate system recorded in the product's own files before you reproject anything.
